Find out more from the AHDS collection record for this resource

This collection consists of an online database of BBC Radio 4's Analysis documentary series which was first broadcast on 10th April 1970. The database is searchable by Programmes, People and Reviews. Today the programmes are half an hour in length and there are up to 30 each year covering political, economic and social issues. Radio 4's 'Analysis' is remarkable because of the significance and importance of participants and the depth of its coverage. The documentary form is described by the present Editor, Nicola Meyrick as the "the journalism of ideas". This exploration of key political and social issues, including those which underpin policy decisions, makes the series a unique record. Until now it has been relatively inaccessible.

Bournemouth University's Broadcasting History Archive comprises collections of journals, reports, series and annuals connected with British broadcasting and broadcasting organisations. Interest in broadcasting history within the university centres on research lead by Professor John Ellis in the Bournemouth Media School.

The Radio 4 Analysis Archive came into being in April 1998. The transfer of the current Radio 4 Analysis office to BBC White City necessitated the relocation of some audio tapes and transcripts. As a result all audio tapes from 1970 to 1994 and all transcripts 1970-1982 were given to the university. Remaining transcripts (1982-1998) were copied and added to the collection during the Autumn term of 1998.

The database contains a complete record of BBC Radio 4 Analysis from 1970 to 1990. Information has been taken from programme transcripts; the Radio Times; the Programme as Broadcast record held at the BBC Written Archive, Caversham. 60 of the programmes have been reviewed in detail. These reviews are made available here as a resource for researchers. Copies of the audio tapes and programme transcripts for this period are held at Bournemouth University.

A version of this database together with additional information such as a thesaurus of subject terms used is available on Analysis Online at Bournemouth University. This project was supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Board.
